ON-SITE ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING FOR CONSTRUCTION USING LOCAL MATERIALS

Additive Manufacturing is a growing field of research with a great promise to revolutionize many traditional industries. One of these industries is architecture and construction. Many different experimental projects are already undergoing and even some commercial 3D printing projects with cement and steel- however, it is still far from changing the fundamental way in which the industry plans and builds. Additive manufacturing for construction encompasses many different technologies such as fused deposition modelling (FDM), material and binder jetting, directed energy deposition (DED) and others, as well as a large array of possible construction materials including cement, plastics, ceramics and metals. Combined with new possibilities offered by computational design and optimization, additive manufacturing in construction, apart from offering a new level of freedom and possibility in the topologies of architectural design, carries the promise of automating construction, cutting on time, costs and waste, for overall improved efficiency and sustainability.
