Material Balance Thinking

matter as a creative agency

When material and design are too widely separated in the architectural research and practice, the informing knowledge coming from technology is not engaged as a creative issue. Instead contemporary innovations in material sciences, in computational tools and in advanced manufacturing are powerful inspiration to design with purpose addressing social and environmental issues: this is our philosophy at MATERIAL BALANCE DESIGN Research Group.

Balance is intended in a synesthetic anthropological perspective: at a physical scale (properties and performances) at a physiological scale (human and non human perception) and last but not lease at a semantic scale (acceptance, desire, archetypical cultural ideas of materiality).

This Material Thinking approach is for us a purpose, a method and a strategy that we apply to all the novel material systems we imagine, create and produce in our Lab at Politecnico di Milano.
